Sheherazade is a window gallery in a one-car garage that exhibits large-scale works of art and site-specific installations. We have no open hours, and our exhibitions are intended to be viewed from the outside 24 hours a day. We are located on the south side of Magnolia Avenue between 2nd and 3rd streets in the Old Louisville neighborhood; our actual street address is 1401 South 3rd Street, Louisville, KY 40208.

  • To provide an alternative, fluid space for individual artists to share non-traditional and site-specific projects with the public

  • To interrupt the boundaries of public and private space in a way that makes outsiders feel like insiders, insiders feel like outsiders, and that causes personal introspection

  • To coexist with, and to engage in cultural exchange with, the neighborhood of Old Louisville

  • To prioritize risk, abjection, and subversion over safety, complacency, and politeness in art

  • To prioritize art that raises questions and challenges the status quo

  • To amplify voices of artists who have not already had significant exposure in the city/region

  • To be and prioritize art that is primarily non-commercial, and not profit-driven

Who is Sheherazade?

Sheherazade is the name of the character who narrates The One Thousand and One Arabian Nights, a collection of ancient tales from the Middle East. The umbrella story that envelopes all of these tales is that of the murderous Sultan Sharyar, a misogynist who marries and then murders a new "virgin" each night. When it is Sheherazade's turn to spend a night with the Sultan, she overpowers him with her words by weaving together a captivating story each night for a thousand and one nights--many of which have remained in the public imagination for millennia.

Sheherazade the window gallery is curated and organized by Julie Leidner, an artist based in Louisville.

While we do not actively seek submissions from artists, we welcome dialogue with anyone who is interested in learning more about what we do. Feel free to drop us a line, and ask to be placed on our mailing list. We periodically send out email announcements about upcoming shows and Open House events.
